How to Create a Cozy Morning Routine as a Busy Mom
What do I mean by a cozy morning routine? To me, it’s less about the steps you take and more about the feeling it creates—comfortable, restorative, peaceful, and grounding. But let’s be honest: as a busy mom, mornings rarely feel that way. They’re often anything but calm and recharging. So the real question is, how do we bring those cozy, healing moments into the chaos of everyday life?
I find that navigating the balance between the two is where the magic lies. A cozy morning routine isn’t about perfection or silence; it’s about finding small ways to weave comfort and calm into the middle of real life. It’s the little shifts that bring warmth to your day before the whirlwind begins. Here are some simple tried and true ways you can create a cozy morning routine as a busy mom.
1. Wake up to something gentle.
Instead of starting the day with a loud alarm or instantly checking your phone, try easing into the morning. Play soft music, light a candle, or open the curtains to let the morning light in. Even a tiny shift in how you wake up can change the tone of your whole day. I also find that waking up before my children (as much as possible), makes a huge difference in my day. Yes that might require waking up earlier, but I feel more in control of my day when I start it off this way.
2. Create a warm drink ritual.
Whether it’s coffee, tea, or even warm lemon water, savor those first few sips. Hold the mug in both hands, breathe in deeply, and let it feel like a moment that belongs just to you before the rest of the house wakes up. Make it intentional as well as you embrace the new day.
3. Add something grounding.
Take five minutes for journaling, reading something uplifting, or simply sitting in stillness. It doesn’t need to be long—just enough to reconnect with yourself before the day gets busy. For some people, something grounding to them might be exercise. I think exercise brings so many mental and physical benefits, and can be a very grounding practice.
4. Layer in coziness you can feel.
Think fuzzy socks, a cozy robe, or wrapping yourself in a blanket while you get your bearings. Physical comfort often leads to emotional comfort. These are my absolutely favorite cozy socks!
5. Keep it realistic.
Cozy doesn’t mean complicated. If your kids are already up and moving, invite them into your routine—share a blanket, make cocoa together, or listen to calming music while you eat breakfast. Cozy is more about atmosphere than perfection. Be kind to yourself and realize that every day will be different and that's okay. Intention is a very important part of cozy.
